Let's find out in a DEATH BATTLE!

BEFORE WE START...

This blog will cover both Demon Slayer and AOT to its full extent, so spoilers for both anime's, so before you read go finish both the manga's for these anime's, but if you don't care than let's get this started

Backstory

Giyu

  • Full name: Giyu Tomioka
  • Age: 21 (As of chapter 28)
  • AKA: The Water Hashira, Kocho
  • Part of the Slayer Corps
  • Likes: Simmered salmon with daikon, Seeing a fresh plate
  • Dislikes: Demons (Wow)
Giyu grew up alongside his older sister, Tsutako Tomioka. When he was still a child, his sister sacrificed herself to protect him from the Demons.
After the death of Tsutako, Giyu tried to tell others that she was killed by a Demon, however, he was labeled as mentally ill and was sent away to one of his relatives, a doctor. Giyu ran away during the journey there and almost died on a mountain, but he was rescued and became apprenticed under Sakonji Urokodaki.

Giyu was 13 years old when he met Sabito while training under Sakonji, and they became good friends due to their similar pasts and age. Together, they entered the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane. Giyu was injured after a Demon's attack and was saved by Sabito, who defeated nearly every Demon on the mountain. However, after the week went by, it was revealed to Giyu that Sabito was the only one who died during their selection. As a result of this, Giyu started developing a doubt for the authenticity of his position after becoming the Water Hashira.

Levi

  • Full Name: Levi Ackerman
  • Age: Late 30s
  • AKA: Captain Levi, GIGA CHAD LEVI
  • Part of the survey corps special operations squad
  • Likes: Anything and everything to be spotless clean, Tea
  • Dislikes: Titans (Wow), Anything that's not spotless clean, Zeke
Levi is the son of Kuchel Ackerman, a prostitute who worked in the Underground and was made pregnant by one of her clients. One day, Kenny Ackerman, Kuchel's older brother, came to the city to see her only to find that she was dead. There, he found a young and squalid Levi sitting in front of his mother's bed. In a rare showing of compassion, Kenny decided to take care of him. He raised Levi as well as he could: teaching him knife skills, how to get along with people, and violent behavior. Levi also learned to use his own inner power that he possessed as a member of the Ackerman clan.

Time passed and eventually, Kenny taught Levi everything he knew. However, he did not consider himself as a good father figure. One day, in the subterranean city, Levi started a fight which he won easily. At that moment, Kenny decided to leave him behind, satisfied that he had taught Levi the skills he needed to survive. Later, he became a notorious thug in the underground but eventually left the place to join the Survey Corps. Although he was at odds with Erwin, he ended up becoming one of his most trusted men.

Experience & Skill

Giyu

As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Giyu is a very powerful and skilled combatant. From the beginning, Giyu showed how much he outclassed Tanjiro and his friends, being able to effortlessly capture Nezuko from him and later knocked him unconscious in a single blow. Later, he was able to easily defeat Father in his transformed state and Rui, Lower Rank Five, something Tanjiro and Inosuke respectively failed to accomplish. He also fought equally against fellow Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa in a sparring match. Giyu was also shown easily beating dozens of demons equal to that of the Lower Ranks of the Twelve Kizuki. On top of his incredible skills as a Demon Slayer, Giyu is also a very capable teammate, able to grasp their intentions and work in tandem with it.

Levi

Levi is unbelievably adept at using the vertical maneuvering equipment, to a point that everyone says he is the best at it; even after losing several of his fingers, Levi was still able to utilize the equipment almost as easily as before. He is also said to be as valuable as an entire brigade, far outweighing all of the other soldiers. Furthermore, he was considered extremely strong even before joining the Survey Corps.

Equipment

Giyu

Nichirin Blade

The main weapon of a demon slayer, the nichirin blade, Giyu carries around a standard sized and shaped Nichirin katana with a black blade that has a deep blue outline. His katana's handguard is hexagonal shaped with a bronze core and with an overlapping red fuschia border. As a Hashira, Giyu's blade has the words Destroyer of Demons engraved on the side. Along with his katana, Giyu has a standard sword sheath that is deep black in color.

During his battle against Akaza, Giyu's katana is broken by the Upper Rank. Subsequently, during the final battle against Muzan, he loses his katana and is thrown another by Sanemi Shinazugawa which supposedly belonged to a deceased Water Breathing Demon Slayer that had a deep blue blade and a bronze-coloured handguard which resembled a whirlpool in appearance.

Demon Slayer uniform

A uniform that is worn by all members of the Demon Slayer Corps. No matter the ranking, any individual honed as a Demon Slayer dawn's this incredibly useful garb. The outfit has thick layering that protects the wearer from stabbing/slashing attacks from enemy demons. On top of that, it also has built-in resistance to extreme heat, cold, and water-based attacks.

Levi

Vertical Maneuvering Equipment

Standard equipment for any member of the Survey Corps, this gear gives the humans a distinct advantage over their much larger Titan enemies. The maneuverability of the gear takes advantage of the humans’ smaller hitboxes to the larger forms of the titans, like a fly against an ordinary human. The gear is gas powered and comes with holsters for storing anti-Titan swords

Anti-personnel vertical maneuvering equipment

Mostly an upgrade to the 3-Dimensional Maneuver Gear, these were given to the Survey Corps and the Scouts after defeating the Military Police Brigade and Kenny Ackerman. This version of the gear mostly goes more aggressive on the opponents and replaces the swords with semi-automatic pistols. While they were originally only used for humans since they are not as open ranged as the 3D Gear.

Anti-Titan swords

The swords that are mostly used for slaying titans, these blades come with her vertical maneuvering equipment. They’re very light and are tough enough to pierce the crazy hard skin of Titans. Despite being composed of steel and other rare metals, they can break from extended usage, though upgrades can be made to improve efficiency.

Thunder Spears

Levi does not seem to favor using Thunder Spears, since he does not carry them during the raid on Liberio, contrary to the other members of the Survey Corps's ground forces. However, he is competent enough with them to blow Zeke out of his Beast Titan's nape when Zeke tries to escape after turning Levi's soldiers into Titans

Abilities

Giyu

Indomitable Will

Giyu possesses an undaunted will and indomitable will, never giving up despite suffering numerous injuries against Akaza, one of the strongest demons in existence and later on the Demon King, Muzan. Even when losing his arm, he still remained steadfast and managed to play an important role in defeating Muzan.

Tactical Intellect
(idk what image to use here lols)

Giyu possessed great tactical intellect and sharp observation, always remaining calm, composed, and focused on analyzing the situation and reacting accordingly. When he initially fought Tanjiro, he was able to immediately understand Tanjiro’s strategy with his hidden hatchet throw. He has also displayed sharp critical thinking and accurate tactical analysis mid-battle, precisely determining and noting details with his keen observation. In his clash with Akaza, Giyu was able to keep pace during the high-speed battle, while critically noting the precision and accuracy of his techniques and instantaneous adaptation, and the intense overall nature of the Upper Rank. Additionally, Giyu also shows good survival skills; after fighting Akaza and bleeding profusely from his sustained wounds, Giyu lit a fire and heated his sword to cauterize his wounds. In his confrontation with Muzan, when Tanjiro tried to fight head on out of anger, Giyu advised the strategy of stalling the demon instead until allies arrived.

Breathing Styles

In order to efficiently kill Muzan’s demons, the Demon Slayer Corps developed special sword styles where swordsmen can utilize specific and concentrated breathing patterns. These styles help increase the lung capacity and the amount of oxygen in a Demon Slayer’s blood, enhancing their physical capabilities and mental concentration to be on par with demons, and can clot their wounds sustained from severe injuries as well as slowing down any poison that’s circulating within their bloodstream.

An advanced form is Total Concentration Breathing, where Demon Slayers can raise the limits of their physical and mental prowess by inhaling the maximum amount of oxygen as much as they can, temporarily boosting their combat capabilities for a decisive attack. However, some Demon Slayers can constantly maintain Total Concentration Breathing at all times throughout day and night and even during sleep. This type of training showcases an immense difference in strength, speed and stamina between those who completed it and those who haven’t.

Finally, while there are numerous breathing styles, most Demon Slayers stick to one style. However, talented demon slayers can use more than one breathing style at a time known as Breathing Hybridization, allowing them access to every advantage those styles have to offer

Water Breathing

Giyu's main breathing style, Water Breathing is a beginner-friendly fighting style specializing in adaptability and fluidity of water in combat. Despite not being the style most suited for his nature.

  • First Form: Water Surface Slash: The user generates enough momentum to create a powerful single concentrated slash.
  • Second Form: Water Wheel: The user leaps and vertically spins forward in the air while releasing a flowing attack in a circular motion.
  • Third Form: Flowing Dance: The user swings and bends their blade in a winding motion along with their body and dances in a flowing pattern, slicing everything in its path.
  • Fourth Form: Striking Tide: The user makes multiple consecutive slashes while twisting their body and sword in a flowing fashion to deliver multiple blows simultaneously.
  • Fifth Form: Blessed Rain After the Drought: The user changes the grip on their sword and decapitates the opponent in a single flowing strike that causes little to no pain. It is a “sword strike of kindness” used when the enemy willingly surrenders.
  • Sixth Form: Whirlpool: The user fiercely twists their upper and lower body, creating a whirlpool of air that cuts anything caught in it. Its effect and efficiently is enhanced underwater, where the user can draw water around their weapon to enhance their slashes.
  • Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust: The user performs a fast and accurate stab, capable of reducing the impact of a moving target.
  • Eighth Form: Waterfall Basin: The user cuts the target vertically in a flowing motion which is most effective when they are falling downward.
  • Ninth Form: Splashing Water Flow: The user changes their footwork in a way that minimizes the landing time and surface needed when landing, allowing the user to move without limits. Ideal when fighting in a place with no solid foothold.
  • Tenth Form: Constant Flux: The user performs a continuous flowing attack which seemingly takes the form of a water dragon that increases in strength and power with each rotation due to momentum.
  • Eleventh Form: Dead Calm: A form of his own personal creation, the user ceases all body movements and enters a state of complete tranquility, deflecting, blocking and cutting any incoming attacks with imperceptible speed with his blade. However, its effectiveness is limited as fast and numerous attacks can break through.
Game Exclusive Techniques
  • Eleventh Form: Dead Calm, Tidal Waves: An offensive variation of Dead Calm. The user initiates Dead Calm, before suddenly appearing behind their opponent, having already moved and unleashed a delayed-barrage of sharp water sword slashes that completely lacerates them before summoning multiple towering tidal waves and causing them to slam downwards on their enemy with tremendous force
Healing

Due to Total Concentration Breathing, Giyu is skilled enough to slow down wounds, and recover during combat with just a single breath. He even can strengthen the muscles around his broken bones with simply short rapid breaths.

Demon Slayer Mark

Only by surviving a near-death experience, such as a searing fever and incredibly high heart rate, can the Mark manifest, making it a rare but powerful reward for the battle-worn Demon Slayers. During his battle against Akaza, Giyu awakens his Demon Slayer Mark, appearing as a fluid-water like design on his left cheek, complementing his Breathing Style, Water Breathing. When activated, he gains a tremendous increase in speed, precision, and endurance to the point where he could engage in a long battle against the Upper Rank.

Levi

Inhuman Strength
(Sexy ahh man bro)

Levi has formidable physical strength, which is no doubt evident by his mastery of the vertical maneuvering equipment. Despite his small stature, his body is well built with heavy muscle, making him very strong, and easily able to defeat his opponents. At one point, Levi intercepts one of the Female Titan's attacks, by using her hand to launch himself towards her mouth before she could hit Mikasa. This does not stop him from injuring himself though.

Intelligence
(idk what to put here so)

Aside from his extraordinary battle skill, Levi has shown a profound ability to quickly analyze situations, and make calculated decisions in the heat of battle. This has given him the ability to save himself and his comrades on many occasions

Skilled Swordsmanship

Like any Scout, Levi has trained for countless hours in order to master the art of the blade. However, he stands out compared to others in this regard, as few others can match his skills in sword fighting.

Levi has an unusual fighting stance that involves holding his right sword backhanded with the blade facing out and being behind him instead of in front of him. By doing this, the blades cut in a "circle" around him, and give him the ability to utilize spinning and other rotating attacks, allowing him to maintain incredible speed and agility while fighting. At the same time, this helps him keep his energy up without wasting stamina and strength needlessly, enabling him to fight for longer periods of time and take multiple targets out simultaneously. This reverse-grip technique may have been inspired by Kenny Ackerman's lessons on knife-wielding, in which Levi learned at a young age how to hold a blade in a reverse grip.

Awakened Power

Being a member of the Ackerman, Levi has "awakened" a dormant power within himself earlier in his life that he describes as "knowing exactly what needs to be done. This also prevents him from having his memory wiped.

Levi used this ability numerous times against his fights with the Beast and Female Titans.

Feats

Giyu

Overall

Levi

Overall

  • Exceptional skill with ODM/3DM is self-taught
  • Can use 3DM/ODM indoors
  • Brought a knife to a sword fight and lived
  • Usually takes on Titans by himself
  • Defeated Zeke Jaeger in his Beast Titan form
  • Kills two titans in one move
  • Dispatched the Female Titan with Mikasa's help
  • Dispatched the Rogue Titan in Berserk mode
Strength

Speed
Durablity
  • Can survive the energy exerted on his body by the impact of landing at high speeds on solid surfaces with the 3D Maneuver Gear, which would yield 331,532.5 Joules.
  • Took an attack from the Female Titan but broke his ankle
  • Took a Thunder Spear at point-blank range and survived, though with severe injuries (Levi would’ve died if not for surgery, and after that he was wheelchair-bound for the rest of the series)
Weakness

Giyu

While the nichirin Blade is a amazing weapon to deal with any incoming threats, the sword is still able to be broken, Giyu is also only shown to be proficient in swordplay, not so much hand-to-hand combat

Additionally, Giyu's breathing techniques require, well, breathing. While it’s not uncommon for Demon Slayers to manage their own even in fights where breathing is incredibly dangerous, Giyu is obviously at his best when his breathing is uninhibited, and taking too much damage to his lungs can severely hamper his techniques.

And like everyone Giyu is just human in the end, well, a powerful human at that something that the Slayers get told time and time again, even with all the stamina one can have, sometimes their body just cant keep up with their foes

Levi

My guy is a germaphobe

His abrasive personality and perfectionism make him an ineffective team player. Vertical Maneuvering Equipment's effectiveness also diminishes in open, level-grounded environments.

The Anti-Titan swords are able to break as they can shatter on hard surfaces and break from overuse alongside with the gas being limited, although he is able to kill people, most of his equipment's are made to handle and kill Titans

Verdit

Stats

Both Giyu and Levi are pretty grounded and high tier when it comes to stats in their verse, so since they get their stats mostly from scaling let's go over and compare the feats that they both scale to. Starting off with Giyu he should would scale directly to every demon and slayer like Tanjiro who can split a boulder in a slice which get 0.018 tons of TNT. Fellow demon slayer Zenitsu also performed a feat of moving his sword faster than lighting. Such feat would get 8.6 - 172.6 Tons of TNT. Giyu shouldn't be to far off from Doma who can create a ice statue while poisoned, this got 70.1 - 458.382 tons of TNT. To wrap it up Giyu should scale to anime only feat that was performed by Gyutaro blood sicking explosion across the Yoshiwara District, the explosion got 2.405 kilotons of TNT, now you maybe wondering how would Giyu compare to this??

Fellow Hashira Tengen and other demon slayers who were weaker at the time like Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke where there and took the explosion and came out alive, they would later on fight other stronger demon's like Akaza and Gyutaro, who they could hurt and take hits from, Giyu already fought Akaza and showed that he can match and keep up with him, so Giyu getting the full scaling to the explosion wouldn't be a problem.

While on the other hand with Levi he would physically scale to pure titan breaking walls due to his Ackerman blood making him have strength comparable to that of a pure titan in a human state, but with his blades is a different story, being able to hurt titants like the female titan who broke a church resulting in .03430 tons, and being able to harm the armor titan who destroyed wall Rose which comes out to 1.9507686424 tons of TNT. Reiner was even able to withstand Armin's transformation enegry, which outputted an enegry worth to 72.86 tons TNT, Levi should get higher with thunder spears which can harm stronger titan's like the warhammer, beast and already mentioned Armor titan.

Speed paints a very clear picture, Levi may be able to dodge bullet's (Mach 1.92) and is faster than Eren who can transform fast enough to intercept a canon ball which is Mach 4.25, a good showing of speed in itself, it's nowhere near impressive compared to Tokito slicing 10,000 projectiles and scaling to characters like Zenitsu, even the lowest speed feat Giyu can scale to is faster than Levi's highest (Mach 4.25 vs Mach 12.16) that's a 3 times speed gap, no matter what Giyu will always be faster than Levi.

So in the end if you only include manga feats and use low ends Levi should have a clear cut advantage in AP thanks to the thunder spears, however, that's only if you go with the low ends, with high ends Giyu easily takes the advantage here, even only with Zenitsu's feat, not to mention if you do use the anime only feat Giyu becomes allot more powerful.

Arsenal and Abilities

In terms of arsenal Giyu doesn't have much outside of his sword, but despite only having a sword that's more than enough to defend himself against Levi's attack's. Due to Levi mainly fighting with his swords Giyu will be in a very familiar passion thanks to training against other swordsmen like Rengoku, Shinobu and Tengen, this gives Giyu a huge advantage over Levi who has fought regular people in the past, but is mainly familiar with taking on titan's and other's use the same gear as him, Giyu doesn't.

Levi has also never seen anything like breathing styles before, meaning that he as to face a whole new threat outside of normal guns and titans. Water breathing gives Giyu more options to attack Levi, with all its forms and aoe attacks, alongside being able to heal off any attacks that Levi may land, thats if he can even touch Giyu to start with.

Levi maybe able to really hurt Giyu if he lands a thunder spear, Levi has never shown to use it as effetely and good as Mikasa, as he himself said he doesn't like using them he rather stay with the blades so its not good to assume he's as good as Mikasa with them, Levi still has been shown to use them when comes to shove, but not only does Giyu have a massive speed advantage, making it unlikely that he'll be able to land them, the thunder spears are really his only win con.

Now the one you'll been waiting for, awaked power vs demon slayer mark, which is better? let's start with awaked power, with this Levi becomes a monster, being able to cut through titans that he usually wouldn't being able to thanks to their harden skin, he becomes stronger than that of pure titans thanks to this power, this also seems to give Levi a speed boost of some kind as he was able to blitz a titan effortlessly, this also gives the user the combined skills of all Ackermans that lived before them alongside greatly improving the users battle skill and intelligence.

Now onto Giyu, the demon slayer mark gives the user a massive increase in speed, prescision and endurence allowing him to take alot more hits than normal, and a considerable boost to his physical capabilities, possibly (though not confirmed to be) a hundred times greater than his average.

Now going through them, awaked power seems better, thanks to increasing more overall and giving Levi the experience of other Ackermen, both increase the user stats and becomes them more deadly to go up against but i'll give Giyu the advantage here to to the massive increase in endurance, which shown to help him survive fatal wounds and still keep on pushing, along with his precession being increase which mixed with his massive speed advantage would help him land a strike good enough to put help him land a fatal blow, along

Intellect, Experience

Both Giyu and Levi are very capable fighter's in their own right, both being able to come up with plans on the fly. Battle skill would probably be a tie. Levi as he shown to have a more battle focused mind while Giyu is about reading the enemy and going after their mistakes, playing more defensive while Levi is offensive, both have been shown to switch when needed with Giyu going on offensive against Akaza and Levi going defense when fighting the female titan, both can quickly analyze situations for their favor and make quick decisions that come out their way, both have also shown to go out of control when pushed to that point not making any plan and just going in guns blazing.

Experince has to go to Levi thanks to his awaked power giving him the experience of past Ackermen, while Giyu has been training for years and to earn his spot and sure is experienced when it comes to fighting, you just can't beat generations of battle experience passed down.

Tertiary Factors

Both have shown amazing swordsmen ship both training with masters of the sword with Levi just being good at it thanks to his Ackermen blood, Giyu is good enough to become a hashira the highest title a demon slayer can get while Levi is said to be the strongest and best solider among all the others. comparing them directly Giyu is probably better thanks to actually training with a former hashira which is more impressive than Levi just being good at it thanks to his blood.

In terms of experience, both have been training since the very start, with Levi being older but Giyu likely starting a bit earlier, based on the earliest examples we’ve seen of Levi fighting. The difference wouldn’t be terribly significant, however, and both have feats of skill exceeding this level of experience. Giyu was able to match the wind Hashira, who is said one of the most experience, while Levi was similarly able to take down the man who trained him everything he knows.

Summary

Giyu

Advantages:
  • Better-trained swordsmen
  • More versatility

  • Not as experienced due to awakened power
  • Weaker with low ends
  • Thunder Spear could one shot if low end is taken
  • Less equipment
  • Has never delt with anything like the ODM gear
  • Awakened power could help Levi keep up
  • Probably physically weaker
  • Nichirin blades can break
Levi

Advantages:
  • Far more experienced with awakened power
  • Probably physically stronger
  • Better AP if low ends are used
  • Thunder Spears could one shot Giyu if low ends are used
  • More equipment
  • Giyu never fought anything like the ODM gear
  • Awakened power would help him keep up with Giyu for longer
  • Actually has friends
Disavantages:
  • Giyu is the better swordsmen
  • A lot weaker than Giyu with high ends and anime feat
  • Much slower
  • Has never fought anything similar to breathing styles
  • Very limited compared to water breathing
  • Giyu has AOE attacks like dead calm
  • Will have difficulty landing Thunder Spears
  • Weaponry are very limited and can easily break or run out
  • Demon Slayer mark helps Giyu in the long run
  • Giyu can heal wounds and fatal wounds with Demon Slayer mark
Conclusion

Levi is  undoubtedly one of the greatest soldiers ever in AOT history, and would certainly win in a few occasions thanks to his Thunder Spears, But Giyu's massive speed advanatge, massive power and durability gap with high ends and Gyutaro explosion, the usefulness of the Demon Slayer mark making him even more of a tank and his breathing abilities consistently making sure he lands a hit or more on Levi, putting him down for good. The winner is the water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka
